#Ookomics (Governance Enhancement Economics)
Kenya Heroes' (Mashujaa) Day 2021 Reflections
In a memo to my directors dated the 9th of August 2021 which later appeared on social media, I introduced #ookomics (governance enhancement economics). With that, I had pledged to use Kshs 2.7 million ($25,000) of my own money over the next one year (August 2021 to June 2022) on community development projects in Kenya. Tagged as either charity donations or social investments depending on the operational logistics, appropriate cash amounts are disbursed to qualified beneficiaries after every two months. We therefore had a beneficiary in the month of August 2021 who opened up ladies’ shoes business in Nairobi. For the month of October, I’m happy to report that the beneficiary of a total of Kshs 1.5 million is the Ooko John Luo Music Revolution (OJLMR) group. I truly feel honoured that these musicians have incorporated my names to form the base of their new identity and mission! Their share of social investment package has gone toward: 1. Full band equipment including 3 Fender guitars, 1 Fender bass guitar, 4 guitar bags, 4 guitar straps, 1 Peavey power amplifier CS 4000, 1 Yamaha mixer MG16/GFX, 1 guitar effects, 1 DBX drive rack, 4 corded microphones, 4 microphone stands, 1 roll microphone cable, 1 book stand, 3 Nexo speakers 15", 2 JBL Bass speakers 18", 1 Tama drumset, 1 set of Congas, 1 regulator 2KVA, 1 roll speaker cable, 1 stereo cable, 8 mono jacks, 10 speaker jacks, 10 XLR jacks, 50 m extension cable, 1 alto trumpet, 1 tenor trumpet, 1 alto saxophone, 1 tenor saxophone, congas and an emergency generator 2. Carol Anyango Onyango earned the unique position of having been the very first beneficiary of #ookomics (governance enhanced economics) on August the 2nd of 2021. She is an experienced hair stylist who has been plying her trade in Nairobi city as an employee. The charity donation of KShs 52,300 ($488) has been a huge economic leverage for her toward her dreams of entering full entrepreneurship on her own accord. She has gone ahead and opened up a ladies' footwear shop to support her other trading occupations. During our last discussion, she revealed how being a beneficiary of #ookomics (governance enhanced economics) has changed her life in a positive manner. The award has enabled her to better take care of her family while setting up future economic growth goals! All of us here at KCEP wish you well in your future dreams! October 2021 Beneficiary!
Hailing from Migori County, the Ooko John Luo Music Revolution (OJLMR) group is an assemblage of very experienced musicians from the earlier Benga craze many outfits as Victoria Band's many branches. Within this troop, we also find a creed of young musicians as well as gospel artists who have been co-opted for this new project of revolutionising contemporary Luo music. The group is the proud beneficiary of a total sum of KShs 1,5 million ($14,019) in the form of a social investment structure. Some of the notable names in this group are Lawrence Oguda OTC, Aloo Wiva, Ouma De Emma, Otieno Kidungu Jakimai, Omondi Wuod Kakoth and Otibo Taliban. Before reaching to my #ookomics (governance enhancement economics) programme, most of these experienced musicians have been facing monumental economic challenges which could not allow them to operate with ease in an occupation they solemnly love. Those primary challenges have mostly included:
As a way of addressing these main challenges earlier faced by the OJLMR group, they are now the proud beneficiaries of:
The marketing and promotion carnival launch event is scheduled for the 4th of December 2021. I will use the occasion to release two of my own songs. We will send the necessary updates to the event, as we look forward to reveling with you all! December 2021 Beneficiary!
We are happy to announce the beneficiary for the month of December 2021. Magdalena Bengi Orego is one of the many struggling mothers among the local communities in Kenya. Hailing from Gwasi location in Homa Bay County, she has had to support her family on small trading and farming. When it comes to buying, transporting and selling her trading products, she has always relied on donkeys. With the KCEP donation amounting to KShs 31,118 ($290), she is now able to stabilise her business by opening up a store front in a local business hub, as well as hiring a less strenuous transport system for goods' transport needs. We wish her well in her new business operations! February 2022 Beneficiary!
Our February 2022 beneficiary is a promising entrepreneur whose drive has subsequently led to being inducted into an operational role within our leadership. Edith Knight Owido has mostly been involved in a small business in the fashion industry under the name of Knighty Collections. This, she has operated from the family residence while also being actively involved in modeling, presently holding the highly acclaimed title of Miss Tourism Kenya, Migori County. With a business infusion capital amounting to Kshs 50,123 ($455) from KCEP, she has been able to expand her fashion business base, as well as refining the logistics of efficiently reaching additional customers. All of us at KCEP wish her well in her mission, while looking forward to her critical contribution to the KCEP vision! April 2022 Beneficiaries!
For the month of April 2022, we decided to honour two groups of beneficiaries. This decision was taken because of competing needs that we felt were very essential to the community we serve. The first in line from this beneficiary is Margaret Atieno Nanga. A widow since 1975, whose only two children are dead, she is very much the bread-winner for a grand-daughter and three great grand-children. Before the donation from KCEP, this lady has been struggling through subsistence farming with no real means of a stable family support system. With a donation of KShs 30,052 ($274), she is planning to open up a small trading shop selling grocery items to supplement her subsistence farming. The other beneficiary for the April 2022 is the St Lucia Nango Legio Maria of African Church Bondo. This religious sect had approached me earlier in late 2020 to participate in a fundraiser geared toward erecting their new place of worship. Through an impressive effort, the church members with the support of other community members are now in need of putting the finishing touches to their new building. With the donation of Kshs 20,000 ($182) from KCEP, this congregation will be able to make a less steep effort in bringing their project to a close. All of us at KCEP wish the two very deserving beneficiaries the best in their future dreams! June 2022 Beneficiary!
For the month of June 2022, we were able to help Light World Mission Usenge Church purchase a keyboard. With a donation totaling KShs 40,844 ($356), the church will now be able to make that huge step of equipping their choir troop with an additional variety of instruments. All of us here at KCEP send our warmest regards to all the members of the church, as we also wish them happy congregations ahead. With this donation, the Light World Mission Usenge Church earned that distinguished honour of being the last beneficiary of the 2021 - 2022 #ookomics initiative! |
